Wednewsday 5th September

Image of the Week: Chris Pine on a bike? No, this isn't Star Trek 2 but rather the latest incarnation of Jack Ryan, the ultimate CIA agent, immortalised through Tom Clancy's novels and previous big screen outings, such as Clear and Present Danger and The Sum of All Fears. Jack Ryan has been played by Ben Affleck, Harrison Ford and Alec Baldwin in the past so it will be interesting to see what Pine brings to he role. Judging from Pine's usual performances, this may be the first Jack Ryan with a sense of humour.

Good News: just in case you needed proof that you hadn't dreamt the trilogy announcement, the third Hobbit film (which will actually be the middle part of the trilogy) will be called The Desolation of Smaug. Not exactly catchy but at least it gives us a clue how the trilogy will be structured. Presumably, the third part will focus solely on the Battle of the Five Armies.

Mad News: Metal Gear Solid, the jewel in the PlayStation crown circa 1998, is being developed into a film by Spider-Man producer Avi Arad. Considering the cinematic element of the games, with its infamously long movie-style cut-scenes, it is hard to imagine why a film adaptation is even necessary. Then again, Snake's infiltration of Shadow Moses is one of the best stories ever told using a games console so a bigscreen outing could reap a huge box office return.

Sad News: Michael Clarke Duncan has died at the age of 54. Duncan is best remembered for his Oscar-nominated performance as John Coffey in The Green Mile but he also kicks ass in Armageddon and The Scorpion King.

Trailer News: the gritty re-telling of Hansel and Gretel, starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton as the titular witch-hunters, now has a trailer. A fairy tale has never looked this cool before.
